The M&E has long been known as a leader in the passenger car restoration and maintenance segment, and 2023 is proving to be no different. Currently our professional craftsmen are hard at work on at least a half dozen customer cars, on projects ranging from wheel replacement to full floor-up restoration.
In a stroke of luck for rail enthusiasts, two historic railcars recently found themselves side by side at the Morristown and Erie Railway's passenger car shops in Morristown, New Jersey. The Babbling Brook and the Hickory Creek, both once owned by the New York Central Railroad, are now owned by private railcar operators Webb Rail and the United Railroad Historical Society, respectively.
The Babbling Brook, built in 1949, was originally used as a coach car for the 20th Century Limited, a luxury train that ran between New York City and Chicago. It was later converted into a business car and used by the New York Central's executive staff. The car's interior features timeless mid-century design, plush seating, and a full kitchen and dining area. The Hickory Creek, built in 1948, was originally used as a lounge-observation car, and was a favorite of luminaries like Walt Disney and Marilyn Monroe. After being retired from service, the car fell into disrepair, but was eventually restored by the United Railroad Historical Society in the 1990s. Today, the car is used for public excursions and special events. The two railcars were brought together at the Morristown and Erie shops for routine maintenance and repairs. While it may have been a routine occurrence for the workers at the shop, for rail enthusiasts, it was a rare opportunity to see two beautifully restored pieces of history side by side. For those interested in touring or experiencing a ride in these railcars, both are available for private charter through their respective owners.
As rail travel continues to evolve and change, it's important to remember the history and grandeur of the past. These railcars are a reminder of a bygone era when train travel was the height of luxury and sophistication, and the fact that they can still be enjoyed today is a testament to the dedication of those who work tirelessly to preserve them.
